Summer is just around the corner. Have you made your Paris travel plans for the summer yet? July’s main event — save the Tour de France — is Bastille Day (known as “quatorze Juillet” or la Fête Nationale, locally).
The national holiday takes place annually on July 14, to commemorate a day of national unity that was originally held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille.
The three main Bastille Day events are the military parade, the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower, and the Firemen’s Balls held throughout the city. A little pre-planning will go a long way toward enjoying this French national holiday, and surviving the crowds it attracts.
The first thing to know is that you should plan to stay at a hotel within walking distance of the Bastille Day activities you plan to attend. The Metro system will be overrun, stations will be closed, and road traffic will be a mess. I strongly suggest staying at a hotel within walking distance from the Eiffel Tower (for the fireworks) or the Champs-Elysees (for the parade). I’ve included some recommendations for your convenience.
Let’s take a look at the festivities:

Tucked away on a pedestrian street in the Marais, you’ll find L’As du Fallafel serving the best falafel in Paris. In fact, many travelers rave that it’s the best falafel they’ve had anywhere.
When you go, look closely and you’ll see this printed on the big yellow menu: “L’As du Fallafel is recommended by Lenny Kravitz.” You’ll see it again next to their globe logo. Twice. They really mean it.
The celebrity endorsement may or may not sway you, but fact that the endorsement in English should reassure you that this place is tourist friendly. And the rave reviews online (Yelp, the New York Times, etc.) should be enough to convince any skeptics. Here’s my take:
